Sweet almond oil

Sweet almond oil is the fixed oil extracted from the ripe kernel of Prunus amygdalus var. dulcis1. Made mostly of oleic acid, then linoleic acid, with vitamin E89, it is studied in cosmetics as an emollient oil that helps maintain the stratum corneum3. The CIR panel judges vegetable oils safe in cosmetic uses2.

What the research says

Each result shows the protocol and the level of evidence. The higher the level, the better the result carries over to a finished formula.

Clinical trialReview or consensusLaboratory

Facial skinSkincare

An oil that helps maintain the stratum corneum

Review
2022 reviewSweet almond, evening primrose, jojoba

The authors conclude that these oils are useful in skin care, to strengthen the integrity of the stratum corneum and its lipid balance. The data are heterogeneous, the protocols sometimes weak, and the effect depends on the quality of the oil, its stability and the type of formula3.

An oil that stays on the surface

Clinical trial
In vivoConfocal Raman microscopyCompared with jojoba, paraffin, petrolatum

The oil stays in the superficial layers of the stratum corneum, over 0 to 20% of its thickness, and changes lipid order there compared with bare skin. A few free fatty acids reach deeper layers4.

BodyBodycare

Skin hydration in premature newborns

Clinical trial
Applied to the body4 times a day for 5 days90 premature infantsRandomized, controlled

The stratum corneum was better hydrated than in the control group, with both almond oil and sunflower oil, with no harmful effect on the skin. The study was run in a neonatal unit: it does not transfer as is to a consumer product5.

Pregnancy stretch marks: comfort, but no fewer stretch marks

Clinical trial
Sweet almond oil cream160 first-time mothersDouble-blind, 4 groups

Less itching and redness, and less extension of stretch marks than with the base cream or no care. The number and diameter of stretch marks are identical between groups6.

Preventing stretch marks: limited evidence

Review
2015 reviewTopical prevention

The review finds only limited evidence for massage with bitter almond oil, which is not sweet almond, and for centella. It stresses the lack of rigorous controlled trials on these products7.

Composition and qualityAnalyses

An oleic profile, rich in tocopherols

Laboratory
Oil analysesCultivars grown in Morocco

Four cultivars grown in eastern Morocco give an oil with 56.6-64.0% oleic acid and 24.6-29.8% linoleic acid, with 409 to 492 mg/kg of tocopherols. Acid value of 0.32 to 0.36% and peroxide value of 1.88 to 3.18 meq O₂/kg9.

Composition that varies with origin

Laboratory
Almond tree genotypesOil analyses

Oleic acid ranges from 62 to 76% depending on the genotype, linoleic acid from 14 to 30%. Alpha-tocopherol dominates the tocopherols: the choice of raw material therefore changes the profile8.

Extraction and storage

Review
2021 reviewComposition, extraction, storage

The oil contains a large share of mono- and polyunsaturated fatty acids, tocopherol and phytosterols. Composition varies with the origin of the almond and the extraction process, and storage conditions matter10.

Safety and vigilanceTolerance

Vegetable oils: safe under conditions of use

CIR assessment
2017 CIR expert panel244 vegetable oils

The panel concludes that these oils are safe as used in cosmetics. They are used for their conditioning, occlusive, emollient and moisturizing properties2.

Tree nut: skin sensitization possible

Case report
An infant with very reactive skinPositive skin test

A case of sensitization to almond oil applied to the skin is described in an infant, with no almond ingestion. It is a reminder to flag the tree nut origin and to test formulas intended for fragile skin11.

This page summarizes published literature on a cosmetic ingredient. It does not describe the effect of a finished product, which depends on its formula, and it is not medical advice. Several of the studies cited were run or funded by industry; this is indicated in the sources.

Frequently asked questions about sweet almond oil

What is sweet almond oil?
It is the oil extracted from the kernel of Prunus amygdalus var. dulcis. It is mostly made of oleic and linoleic acids, with vitamin E, and is used in cosmetics for its emollient properties. Do not confuse it with bitter almond oil, whose uses differ.
What are the benefits of sweet almond oil for skin?
Reviews describe it as an oil that helps maintain the stratum corneum and its lipid balance3. In premature infants, it increased skin hydration compared with no care5. The evidence remains modest and depends on the formula.
Can you use sweet almond oil on the face?
Yes, it is a common use in makeup removal and nourishing care. It stays on the surface of the stratum corneum4, which makes it a comfort care rather than a deep-acting active. The choice of format (pure oil, milk, cream) depends on the target skin type.
Is sweet almond oil good for hair?
No clinical study used on this page covers hair, so we do not promise a demonstrated effect. In formulation, it is used as a supporting oil in masks, shampoos and leave-ins.
Sweet almond oil, pregnancy and stretch marks: what does the research say?
In a trial of 160 first-time mothers, the sweet almond oil cream reduced itching and the extension of stretch marks, without changing their number or diameter6. A 2015 review concludes there is limited evidence for topical care7. During pregnancy, a healthcare professional's advice remains the rule.
Can you use it on a baby's skin?
Almond or sunflower oils have been studied on premature infants in a hospital unit, with no harmful effect on the skin5. A case of sensitization has nevertheless been described in an infant with very reactive skin11: a baby product is tested and validated with a pediatric opinion.
Is sweet almond oil an allergen?
It is not on the list of fragrance allergens to declare, and the CIR panel judges vegetable oils safe in cosmetics2. Because it comes from a tree nut, sensitization remains possible11: with a known tree nut allergy, ask a healthcare professional.
Can you manufacture a sweet almond oil product for my brand?
Yes. Our ISO 22716 certified lab offers 73 formulas based on sweet almond oil (massage oils, milks, scrubs, baby and mother care) that you can customize, or a custom formula. Samples are free.
